Leather at Dusk

A woven tote, a long cognac coat and a tomato field at the very end of summer.

Some bags are bought for an occasion. Others end up going everywhere: to dinner, on a train, into a field at the end of the day with tomatoes rolling around the bottom. A woven leather tote belongs firmly to the second kind. It softens, it darkens where your hand rests, and after a season it carries the shape of everything you have put in it.

We took one out at golden hour with the simplest possible pairing: a long cognac leather coat, a grey knit, nothing that needed explaining. Tone on tone, warm on warm, the whole look reads as one gesture rather than a list of pieces.

Leather in autumn light does something no studio can fake. The coat picks up the orange of the sky; the tote goes almost red. It is a reminder that colour on a hanger and colour in the world are two different things, and that the second is the one you actually live with.

If there is a rule here, it is to let one material lead. Choose the bag first, then build backwards: a coat in a near shade, trousers that disappear, shoes you can walk through soft ground in.

The best pieces in a wardrobe rarely ask for attention. They just keep turning up, season after season, until they become part of how you see yourself.
